Mayo-Buttry
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
When you step into my office you will be warmly greeted in a judgment-free setting. The therapeutic process starts with a thorough assessment to really get to know who you are and where you are at because the issues you have don’t define who you are as a person. We will work together to identify the problem areas and employ the therapeutic process to foster growth. In an effort to best facilitate that growth, I have trained in therapeutic theories including CBT, DBT, EFT, and Gottman therapy for couples. My personal brand of therapy employs a person-centered approach, using narrative therapy to separate you from your issues and rewrite the story of your life to reflect who you truly are. I believe the therapeutic process needs to be direct, honest, and specifically tailored to the nuances of you and your situation. Certification in Sex Therapy and in Consensual Non-Monogamy through Sexual Health Alliance is in progress.
Complex layered cases are a strong area of mine and I practice from a humanistic strength-based approach and existential background. There isn’t much I haven’t seen. As a trauma survivor myself, I have performed therapy in psych wards, prisons, and women’s health clinics. I truly believe my experiences have instilled a deep and authentic sense of empathy towards those on personal journeys of healing, and a dedication to the therapeutic process. My early education focused on women’s studies, sexuality and gender, and social justice issues. Starting your journey on the therapeutic process can be intimidating, but I am here to guide you on the process to meaningful growth.
I enjoy working with individuals and couples who are faced with a multitude of challenges. My specialty focuses on issues of sexuality and gender, with a keen sensitivity to individuals who self-identify as female. I employ a holistic, person-centered approach to counseling, helping those dealing with feelings of guilt and shame narrate their stories to overcome traumatic issues. My therapeutic approach focuses on building a strong, healthy foundation to overcome self-defeating patterns. Throughout therapy, you can expect to grow your connections to those closest to you by developing communication skills, empathy, and a positive sense of self.

Personal
Personal interests, hobbies and some fun facts:
I’m interested in the vibrant parts of life, and appreciate art, indie-films, burlesque shows, getting lost in New Orleans, and staying up late laughing with good friends. I have always wanted to travel, and I’ve been fortunate enough to go to places like Thailand, Peru, and Costa Rica where I enjoy experiencing different cultures. Fun fact; I’m a huge fan of Halloween, and enjoy fx make-up, extravagant costume design, and decorating to throw a killer party. When I’m not traveling the world or working on my Halloween costumes, I can be found at our home in East Austin with my partner and our three fur babies.
